Natural Labour Induction
Natural Labour Induction
Acupuncture treatment can be administered from 40 weeks of pregnancy to encourage the natural onset of labour. Start treatment soon after going overdue, as successive treatments over a period of 3-5 days may be required.
If you have a medical induction booked
Book this treatment 2-3 days before a planned medical induction and follow-up with self-administered acupressure at home (guidance will be given at your appointment).
Research suggests that inducing women with acupuncture reduces intervention rates, such as the use of syntocinon, epidurals or caesarean sections.
The treatment involves needle stimulation of points in the hands, feet, lower back and shoulders. Needles are left in for up to 40 minutes during which the mother may experience increased fetal movements and mild twinges or contractions.
Following the treatment you will be instructed on acupressure points to use at home.
Please bring your maternity hospital notes to the appointment.
